We grind stumps in Bedford for homeowners finishing a landscaping project, builders cleaning up new-construction lots, and commercial and association properties that want a mowable finish. Our professional stump grinders take each stump below grade, debris safety screens protect siding and vehicles, and we can leave the grindings as mulch or haul them away. We are based in neighboring Goffstown.

What Changes a Stump Grinding Job in Bedford

In Bedford the biggest variable is often what sits near the stump: a named brook, finished landscaping or a new foundation.

The 50-foot stream buffer

Bedford's Stream Protection Ordinance, adopted in 2025, sets a 50-foot non-disturbance buffer on both sides of ten named brooks, including Baboosic, Bowman, Riddle and Sebbins Brook. Dead, diseased or unsafe trees can come down, but the town's guidance says stumps and roots must remain. A stump inside that strip usually stays put.

Established lawns and landscaping

Mature yards often have irrigation, landscape lighting wires and planted beds close to the trees. Dig Safe doesn't mark these private lines, so we need to know where they run before the grinder goes below the surface.

New-construction lots

Bedford grew about 10 percent between 2010 and 2020, and newly cleared house lots often leave rows of stumps. Grinding them before loam and seed go down is far easier than working around a finished lawn later.

Higher, wooded ground in the northwest

Toward Holbrook Hill and Pulpit Rock, the land rises to the highest ground in town. Sloped, wooded lots there take more setup, and rocks around the roots slow the grinding.

Buffers and Utility Rules to Check Before Grinding

Bedford stream buffer. The town's Stream Protection Ordinance creates a 50-foot non-disturbance buffer, measured horizontally from the ordinary high water mark, along Baboosic, Bowman, Bog, McQuesten, McQuade, Pointer Club, Patten, Riddle, Pulpit and Sebbins Brooks. Removing dead, diseased or unsafe trees is allowed, but stumps and roots must remain. Other activities may need a Conditional Use Permit from the Planning Board (Town of Bedford (opens in a new tab)). Ponds, beaver ponds and bogs fall under Bedford's separate Wetlands Conservation Ordinance. The Planning Department answers questions at (603) 472-5243.

Dig Safe. Under RSA 374:48 (opens in a new tab), excavation includes tree and root removal, and RSA 374:51 (opens in a new tab) requires notice at least 72 hours before digging, not counting weekends and legal holidays.

Merrimack River shoreland. Within 50 feet of the river, state law keeps stumps and roots in the ground unless NHDES approves removal or the stump is replaced with new woody vegetation (RSA 483-B:9 (opens in a new tab)).

This is general guidance, not legal advice. We help you spot when a permit question exists so you can confirm it with the town or NHDES before work starts.

How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Bedford?

We don't publish set prices, because every stump is quoted after we see it. Stump Grinding in Bedford: common questions

Can I have a stump ground near a brook in Bedford?

If the stump is within 50 feet of one of the ten named brooks, probably not without town approval. The ordinance lets you remove dead, diseased or unsafe trees there, but stumps and roots must remain. Call the Planning Department at (603) 472-5243 if you are unsure where the buffer line falls.

Do you grind stumps on new-construction lots?

Yes. We grind rows of stumps on cleared lots for builders and new homeowners, and we can haul the grindings so the lot is ready for your loam and seed. Send the plot plan or photos so we can count and size the stumps.

Will grinding damage my irrigation system?

It can if a line runs through the root zone, which is why we ask where your irrigation and lighting wires run. Flag the heads and lines before we arrive, and we will plan the grinding around them.

How much does it cost to grind a stump in Bedford?

National cost guides list about $120 to $400 for a first stump and $30 to $60 for each additional one, but those are reference ranges, not our prices. Try the stump grinding cost calculator for a planning figure, then request a quote.

Are you insured?

Yes. Stump N' Grind Inc. is fully insured and family owned, with 12 years of experience. Debris safety screens go up around each stump to protect your house, cars and landscaping.
