Goffstown is part of our Southern New Hampshire service area, and stump grinding is the service our company is named for. We grind stumps for homeowners in the village, Grasmere and Pinardville, for builders cleaning up house lots, and for landowners and commercial properties that need old stumps gone so the ground can be mowed, planted or built on. Our crew brings professional stump grinders, debris safety screens and a mini excavator when roots or rocks need to be moved, and we can haul the grindings away or leave them for you to use.

To get started, call (603) 438-6492 or use Get a Quote with a few photos and the number of stumps. We are family owned, fully insured and have 12 years of experience. See how the service works on our stump grinding page.

What Changes a Stump Grinding Job in Goffstown

Goffstown runs from tight village lots to steep wooded hillsides, so two stumps of the same size can need very different setups. These are the local conditions we plan around.

Hillside lots below the Uncanoonucs

Lots on the lower Uncanoonuc slopes and other hillsides in the southwest part of town tend to be steep and stony. Rocks around a root flare wear down grinder teeth and have to be worked around or dug out, and a slope limits where a grinder can sit safely, so these stumps take more time than one in a flat lawn.

Piscataquog River and Glen Lake frontage

The South Branch of the Piscataquog through Goffstown is a state-designated river, and Glen Lake sits on it. Within 50 feet of protected water, state rules say stumps and their roots stay in the ground unless removal is approved or the stump is replaced with new woody plantings. We check where each stump sits relative to the water before we grind.

The town's 100-foot wetland buffer

Goffstown's Wetland and Surface Water Conservation District includes a 100-foot buffer around wetlands and surface waters, and the town lists changes to the land surface and removal of vegetation as prohibited there except for specific allowed uses. Low backyards near Black Brook, the river or a wet corner of the lot are worth checking before work.

Tight village and Pinardville yards

In the village center and Pinardville, houses sit close together and backyards are often fenced. We use grinders that fit through gates and set debris screens so chips don't hit siding, cars or a neighbor's windows.

Buried utilities

New Hampshire law counts tree and root removal as excavation. Stumps near a driveway, the street, or the path of a water, gas or septic line need utilities marked before the grinder goes below the surface.

Permits and Rules to Check Before Grinding

Most stump grinding in a Goffstown backyard needs no permit, but a few rules can apply depending on where the stump is.

Dig Safe. Under RSA 374:48 (opens in a new tab), excavation includes tree and root removal, and RSA 374:51 (opens in a new tab) requires notice to the damage prevention system at least 72 hours before digging, not counting weekends and legal holidays. Plan for a utility locate before grinding near buried lines. Dig Safe does not mark private lines such as septic pipes, irrigation or pet fences, so tell us where yours run.

Shoreland. Under the Shoreland Water Quality Protection Act (RSA 483-B:9 (opens in a new tab)), stumps and root systems within 50 feet of a protected waterbody are left intact unless NHDES approves removal or the stump is replaced with pervious surface, new trees or other woody vegetation. The Piscataquog through Goffstown is a designated river under RSA 483:15 (opens in a new tab), and Glen Lake sits on it.

Town wetland buffer. Goffstown's Wetland and Surface Water Conservation District covers wetlands and surface waters plus a 100-foot buffer, where changes to the land surface and removal of vegetation are restricted (Town of Goffstown FAQ (opens in a new tab); Zoning Ordinance, Section 13.3 (opens in a new tab)). If a stump sits near a wetland or brook, check with the Goffstown Planning and Zoning office first.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. We help you spot when a permit question exists so you can confirm it with the town or NHDES before work starts.

How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Goffstown?

We don't publish set prices, because every stump is quoted after we see it. For planning, HomeGuide puts stump grinding at about $120 to $400 for the first stump and $30 to $60 for each additional stump, or roughly $2 to $6 per inch of diameter, with minimum fees of $80 to $160 (HomeGuide (opens in a new tab)). Angi reports a typical range of about $2 to $5 per diameter inch (Angi (opens in a new tab)). These are national reference ranges, not our prices, and conditions in Goffstown can push a job to either end.

What changes the price here

  • Stump diameter and how many stumps are on the property
  • Rocks around the root flare, common on hillside lots
  • Slope and gate width, which decide which grinder can reach the stump
  • Whether the stump sits within 50 feet of the Piscataquog River, Glen Lake or another protected waterbody
  • Hauling grindings away versus leaving them on site
  • Surface roots that need grinding beyond the main stump

Stump Grinding in Goffstown: common questions

Do you grind stumps in the village, Grasmere and Pinardville?

Yes. Goffstown remains in our Southern New Hampshire service area, and we work across town, from the village and Grasmere to Pinardville and the rural roads toward New Boston and Weare. Our grinders can fit through many fenced backyard gates. Call (603) 438-6492 or request a quote with photos.

Can you grind a stump near the Piscataquog River or Glen Lake?

It depends on the distance from the water. Within 50 feet of a protected waterbody, state law keeps stumps and roots in the ground unless NHDES approves removal or the stump is replaced with new woody plants. We look at where the stump sits and talk through options before any grinding.

What happens to the wood chips after grinding?

Grindings are a mix of wood chips and soil. We can rake them out and leave them as mulch, or load them up and haul them away with our trucks and trailers. Hauling usually adds to the cost, so tell us your preference when you ask for a quote.

Do I need Dig Safe before stump grinding?

New Hampshire counts tree and root removal as excavation, and notice must be given at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays. Dig Safe marks public utility lines only, so point out private lines such as septic pipes, irrigation and pet fences before we start.

My stump is on a steep, rocky lot. Can you still reach it?

Usually, yes. Hillside lots on the Uncanoonuc side of town take more setup time, and rocks around the roots slow the grinding. Photos of the stump and the path from the driveway help us bring the right machine.

Are you insured for work on my property?

Yes. Stump N' Grind Inc. is fully insured and family owned, with 12 years of experience. We set debris safety screens around the work area to protect houses, cars and windows from flying chips.
