Forestry Mulching in Fitchburg, MA
One machine cuts, grinds and spreads brush and trees up to 8 inches in diameter as mulch. You get usable land back without burn piles, dump runs or bare soil.

Forestry mulching uses a track loader with a mulching head to grind standing brush and small trees right where they grow. The mulch stays on the ground as a protective layer that holds soil, slows erosion and breaks down over time. It is the most efficient way to reclaim overgrown woods, fields, fence lines, trails and lot edges in New England, where brush comes back fast.
Based in Fitchburg, we run tracked forestry mulchers across north central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. The machines stay light on the ground and can work between the trees you want to keep. Use our forestry mulching cost calculator for a planning estimate, then request a quote and we will confirm the price after seeing the site.
What's included
- Brush, saplings and hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter mulched in place
- Selective clearing around trees you want to keep
- Trails, fence lines, view lines and field edges opened up
- Invasive shrubs like buckthorn and bittersweet cut down to the ground
- Stump grinding for remaining stumps, on request
Who we do this for
- Landowners reclaiming overgrown fields and pastures
- Homeowners pushing back the woods line or opening a view
- Builders who want an early look at a lot before final clearing
- Trail, fence line and right-of-way maintenance
Good to know
- Our mulchers handle hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and the stumps ground separately. Mulching leaves stumps at ground level. If you need a lawn or a building pad, add stump grinding and grading.
- Wetland and shoreland buffers have their own rules. We flag those areas so you can confirm what is allowed before we mulch.

How it works
Mark what stays
We walk the area with you and mark trees, stone walls and features to protect.
Check buffers and access
We look for wet areas, slopes, shoreland and the best route in for the machine.
Mulch
The mulcher cuts and grinds vegetation in place and spreads the material as it goes.
Finish
Stumps can be ground and high-traffic areas smoothed so the space is ready to use.
What affects the price
Every job is priced after we understand the site. These are the factors that move the number.
- Vegetation
- Light brush goes fast. Dense hardwood and thick stems take several times longer per acre.
- Acreage
- Larger areas spread the equipment transport cost over more ground.
- Terrain
- Rolling, steep or rocky ground slows the machine and adds to the price.
- Selective work
- Saving many trees inside the clearing area takes more care than a full clear.
- Add-ons
- Stump grinding, debris hauling and grading are priced separately.
Why mulch instead of clear and haul?
Mulching handles cutting, chipping and spreading in one pass, so there are fewer machines, no trucks hauling brush and no burn permits. The mulch layer protects the soil from washing out on slopes and shades out new weeds for a while. It is not the right tool for a foundation or septic area, where you need bare ground. For those, see land clearing.

Forestry Mulching questions
How much does forestry mulching cost per acre?
Vegetation density, terrain and acreage drive the price. Our forestry mulching cost calculator gives a planning range using reference rates. We confirm the price on site.
How big a tree can a forestry mulcher handle?
We can mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter, along with brush, saplings and softer species. Larger trees are cut first and the stump ground separately. We will tell you which approach fits your lot during the site walk.
Will the brush grow back?
Some species will resprout from roots, especially invasive shrubs. Mulching sets them back hard, and a follow-up pass or mowing in the next season keeps the area open.
Is forestry mulching allowed near wetlands or a lake?
Buffers around wetlands, streams and lakes often limit vegetation removal. In New Hampshire the shoreland law restricts cutting near public waters, and Massachusetts towns regulate work in wetland buffer zones through the conservation commission. We flag these areas so you can confirm with the town or state first.
What does the land look like after mulching?
A layer of shredded wood covers the ground between any trees you kept. It looks raw for a few weeks, then settles and breaks down. Paths and open areas are usable right away.
