Stump Grinding in New Hampshire & Massachusetts
We grind stumps below the surface, clean up the chips and leave a spot you can mow, plant or build on. One stump or a whole lot, across southern New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

A stump left after tree removal gets in the way of mowing, attracts carpenter ants and sends up suckers for years. Grinding is the fastest way to get rid of it without digging a crater in your lawn. Our grinders chew the stump and its main surface roots into wood chips below grade, and we set up debris screens so chips stay off your house, cars and windows.
Stump grinding is our core service. We have been doing it for 12 years from our base in Fitchburg, for homeowners, landscapers, builders and property managers across Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Call us or request a quote with the number and rough size of your stumps, and you can estimate the cost yourself before we talk.
What's included
- Grinding each stump 4-8" below grade
- Grinding the main surface roots around the stump on request
- Debris safety screens set up around the work area
- Hauling away grindings when you want a clean site
- Loam and seed to restore the lawn, on request
Who we do this for
- Homeowners with stumps left after tree removal
- Landscapers and contractors who need stumps gone before planting, fencing or hardscaping
- Builders clearing a lot or a driveway path
- Property managers and HOAs with multiple stumps across a site
Good to know
- Grinding below grade near buried utilities waits until the lines are marked through Dig Safe (811).
- Grinding does not remove the entire root system. Deep roots break down naturally over time.
- Large rocks embedded in a stump can limit how deep we can safely grind. We will tell you on site if that happens.

What affects the price
Every job is priced after we understand the site. These are the factors that move the number.
- Stump diameter
- Price follows the width at ground level, including the root flare. A 30-inch stump takes far longer than a 12-inch one.
- Number of stumps
- Several stumps in one visit cost less per stump than a single one because setup and travel are shared.
- Wood type and age
- Fresh hardwood like oak and maple grinds slower than pine or an old, half-rotted stump.
- Access
- Narrow gates, steep slopes, retaining walls and stumps against foundations or fences take more time and care.
- Surface roots and depth
- Grinding the surface roots or going extra deep for a new planting or structure adds time.
- Chip removal and lawn repair
- Hauling grindings, adding loam and seeding are optional add-ons, not part of the base price.
What happens to the hole and the wood chips?
Grinding leaves a mound of chips mixed with soil, roughly where the stump was. You have three options. Leave the chips to settle and use them as mulch, have us rake them out, or have us haul everything away. Chips from fresh stumps take nitrogen from the soil as they break down, so if you plan to plant grass in the same spot, removing most of the chips and adding loam gives the best result.

Stump Grinding questions
How deep do you grind a stump?
We grind each stump 4 to 8 inches below grade, enough to cover the spot with soil and grass. If you need more depth for a planting bed, fence post, patio or footing, tell us when you ask for a quote and we will plan for it.
Do I need to call Dig Safe before stump grinding?
Grinding below grade disturbs soil near roots, so underground utilities should be marked through Dig Safe (call 811) before work starts. We will confirm with you how the request is handled for your job. Private lines like irrigation, invisible dog fences and lighting are not marked by Dig Safe, so let us know where they run.
Can you get a stump grinder into a fenced backyard?
Often, yes. Many of our jobs are in fenced residential yards. Send us the gate width when you request a quote and we will confirm access before we come out.
How much does stump grinding cost?
It depends on diameter, number of stumps, wood type and access. Try our stump grinding cost calculator for a planning estimate, then call us for a firm quote.
Is Stump N' Grind insured?
Yes. We are fully insured, and we are happy to talk through coverage when you request a quote.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Most stumps will not. Some species, like maple, poplar and black locust, can send up shoots from roots left in the ground. Cutting the shoots as they appear usually ends it within a season.
