We grind stumps for Lowell homeowners, landlords, builders and commercial property managers. Our grinders take the stump below the surface so you can lay sod, plant, pour a patio or extend a driveway, and we set up debris safety screens where houses, cars and fences sit a few feet away.

Call our Massachusetts line at (978) 696-6659 or use Get a Quote with photos, the stump count and the gate width. If the stump is near the sidewalk or street, mention it. In Lowell that can mean the tree was a city shade tree, which changes who is allowed to work on it.

What Changes a Stump Grinding Job in Lowell

Lowell is a dense, built-up city, and that shapes most stump jobs here.

Tight lots and fenced yards

With more than 115,000 people on about 13.6 square miles of land, many Lowell yards are reached through a narrow gate or a shared driveway. Gate width decides which grinder we bring, and close neighbors mean debris screens go up around nearly every stump.

Stumps near the street belong to the city sometimes

Trees in the public way, in parks, or planted with public funds within 20 feet of a public way can be protected shade trees under Lowell's tree ordinance. If your stump might be one of those, the City's Tree Warden has a say before anyone grinds it.

Crowded underground utilities

Gas, water, sewer and electric service lines often run within a few feet of front-yard and tree-belt stumps in older neighborhoods. Grinding is excavation below grade, so the area gets premarked and Dig Safe is notified first, and marked lines can limit grinding depth.

Slopes on Lowell's drumlins

Hills like Fort Hill and Lynde Hill in Belvidere and Christian Hill in Centralville put some backyards on a grade. Sloped yards change how we position the grinder and how chips are contained so they do not wash toward the street.

Permits and Utility Rules for Stump Grinding in Lowell

A stump in your own backyard usually needs no permit. These are the rules that can come into play.

Dig Safe. Massachusetts law, MGL c.82 §40A (opens in a new tab), requires notice at least 72 hours before excavating, not counting Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays, with the work area premarked. Grinding below grade is treated with the same care.

Public shade trees. Under MGL c.87 §3 (opens in a new tab), public shade trees may only be cut or removed by the tree warden or with the warden's permission, after a public hearing. Lowell's tree ordinance (opens in a new tab) protects trees in the public way, in parks and on public property, and states that it does not regulate the removal of trees on private property.

Riverfront and wetlands. Near the Merrimack, the Concord or a brook, work within the wetland buffer or the 25-foot riverfront area that applies in Lowell may need Conservation Commission (opens in a new tab) review.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. When we see a permit question on your property, we will flag it so you can confirm with the City of Lowell.

Stump Grinding in Lowell: common questions

Can you grind the stump in the strip between my sidewalk and the street?

Check with the City first. Trees in the public way can be protected shade trees under Lowell's ordinance and state law, and only the Tree Warden or someone with the warden's permission can work on them. If it turns out to be on your property, we can grind it.

My backyard is fenced with a narrow gate. Can you still get in?

Send the gate width and a photo with your quote request. We match the grinder to the access, and we set up debris screens when neighbors, cars or windows are close.

Who calls Dig Safe?

The excavator gives Dig Safe notice at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays, and the area is premarked first. Private lines like sprinkler pipes, landscape lighting or a line to a garage are not marked, so tell us where those run.

What do you do with the chips on a small city lot?

We can rake them out, leave some for mulch, or load them up and haul them away. On a small Lowell lot with no spare garden beds, hauling is often the simpler choice so the yard can be seeded or paved right away.

Are you insured?

Yes. Stump N' Grind is fully insured, which matters when the work is a few feet from a neighbor's fence or car.
