We grind stumps for Worcester homeowners, landlords, builders and commercial property managers. Our grinders take stumps below the surface so you can seed, plant, pave or build, and debris screens go up where houses, cars and windows are close.

Call our Massachusetts line at (978) 696-6659 or use Get a Quote with photos, the number of stumps and the tree species if you know it. In Worcester the species matters: the city is still inside the Asian longhorned beetle quarantine, and wood from host trees cannot simply be hauled anywhere.

What Changes a Stump Grinding Job in Worcester

Stump grinding in Worcester is shaped by its hills, its dense older neighborhoods and a beetle quarantine that has been in place since 2008.

The Asian longhorned beetle quarantine

As of September 2026, the regulated area covers all of Worcester, plus Boylston, West Boylston and part of Auburn. The state restricts moving wood that could carry the beetle, so chips and roots from host trees such as maples may need to stay on site or go to an approved disposal point instead of leaving the city.

Hillside yards

Worcester is called the City of Seven Hills, and slopes on hills like Vernon Hill, Grafton Hill and Bancroft Hill reach right into backyards. On a grade we set the grinder carefully, control where chips land, and plan how to fill the hole so it does not wash out.

Close neighbors and utilities

Many Worcester lots are narrow, with driveways, fences and a neighbor's house within a few feet. Service lines often run near old yard trees, so the area is premarked and Dig Safe is notified before we grind.

Former street trees at the curb

If the stump is in the tree belt or close to the sidewalk, it may be a public shade tree. Worcester's ordinance requires the Tree Warden's written approval before a public tree is cut or removed, and the City's Forestry division can tell you who owns it.

Permits and Rules for Stump Grinding in Worcester

A stump in your own yard does not usually need a permit, but three rules are worth knowing.

Beetle quarantine. The state's September 2026 update (opens in a new tab) confirms Worcester is still in the 75.75 square mile ALB regulated area. It asks residents to confirm that tree companies have an ALB compliance agreement and to contact the eradication program or the city about how to dispose of or move yard waste. The Massachusetts ALB program (opens in a new tab) lists the wood disposal site and a contact line.

Public shade trees. Under MGL c.87 §3 (opens in a new tab) and Worcester's Ordinance Relative to the Protection of Public Trees (opens in a new tab), no public shade tree may be cut, trimmed or removed without the Tree Warden's prior written approval. The City's trees page (opens in a new tab) says private trees are the owner's responsibility and to call 508-929-1300 and ask for Forestry if ownership is unclear.

Dig Safe. MGL c.82 §40A (opens in a new tab) requires notice at least 72 hours before excavating, not counting weekends and legal holidays, with the area premarked.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. We will point out any permit or quarantine question we see on your property.

Stump Grinding in Worcester: common questions

Does the Asian longhorned beetle quarantine affect my stump grinding?

It can. All of Worcester is still in the regulated area, and the state restricts moving wood that could carry the beetle. Leaving chips on site is usually the simplest option, and the ALB program can answer disposal questions for host wood.

Can I keep the grindings in my yard?

Yes. We can rake them out and leave the rest as mulch. In a quarantine city, keeping chips on your property is often easier than hauling them.

The stump is next to the sidewalk. Is it mine?

Maybe not. Trees along sidewalks and on city property are usually the City's, and Worcester requires the Tree Warden's written approval to cut or remove a public tree. Call 508-929-1300 and ask for Forestry if you are not sure.

Can you grind a stump on a steep backyard?

Usually, yes. Send photos that show the slope and the path from the street. We plan grinder placement and chip control around the grade before the day of the job.

Do you work after storms in Worcester?

Yes. We offer 24/7 emergency storm response for downed trees. See storm damage cleanup or call (978) 696-6659. Stumps can be ground once the wood is cleared.
