We use track loaders with forestry mulcher heads to turn brush, saplings and small trees into mulch that stays on the ground. We can mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and their stumps are ground separately.

In Billerica that suits overgrown lot edges, back acreage behind older village homes, and wooded parcels where you want to open a trail or a view. Call (978) 696-6659 or use Get a Quote with photos and a rough size of the area.

Size limit: We can mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and the stumps ground separately.

Where Forestry Mulching Fits in Billerica

Mulching leaves roots and soil in place, which makes it a good match for Billerica's many lots that run up to wetlands, streams and the lakeshore.

Natural vegetation strips beside wetlands

Billerica's by-law lets the Commission require a strip of natural vegetation inside the 100-foot buffer, and the town describes an inner No Alteration Zone of 25 or 50 feet. We stop the mulching line short of that strip rather than clearing to the wet edge.

Brush along the Concord and Shawsheen

Land within 200 feet of a river is a riverfront area under state law. Even brush clearing there counts as altering the area, so we mulch only the upland side of the line you have approval for.

Overgrown edges between villages

With nine villages packed into about 26 square miles, brush and saplings fill in on lot edges, vacant parcels and the backs of long lots. Mulching clears them in one pass without burn piles or truckloads of brush.

Wooded lots beside big forest tracts

Properties near Billerica State Forest, a 370-acre tract, often border continuous woods with no obvious line. Staking or a survey before we mulch keeps the work on your side of the boundary.

Buffer Rules for Mulching in Billerica

Mulching leaves roots and soil in place, but wetland rules still apply to vegetation.

Billerica Wetlands By-Law. Altering a wetland resource area or the land within 100 feet of it needs a by-law permit from the Conservation Commission, and the by-law lists destroying or cutting vegetation in a resource area as an alteration. A riverfront area has no extra 100-foot buffer beyond it (Article XXII (opens in a new tab)).

Town guidance. The town describes the inner buffer as a No Alteration Zone of 25 or 50 feet and says removing vegetation in protected areas must be reviewed by the Conservation Department. It asks owners to call before hiring a contractor, at (978) 671-0966 (Conservation FAQ (opens in a new tab)).

State law. Removing or altering a bank, riverfront area or freshwater wetland requires a notice of intent to the Conservation Commission, and the riverfront area runs 200 feet from a river's high-water line (MGL c.131 §40 (opens in a new tab)).

We will flag buffer questions we see on site. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Forestry Mulching in Billerica: common questions

What is the biggest tree you can mulch?

We mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Anything larger is cut first, and its stump is ground separately.

Can you mulch right up to the edge of a wetland on my lot?

No. Billerica regulates the 100-foot buffer around wetlands, and the town describes an inner No Alteration Zone of 25 or 50 feet. We set the work line back unless the Conservation Commission has approved more.

Is brush near the Concord River treated differently?

Yes. State law defines a 200-foot riverfront area along a river, and Billerica's by-law adds its own review. Clearing brush there can need Commission approval, so check before we schedule it.

How long before brush grows back?

Saplings and shrubs can resprout within a season or two. A follow-up mulching pass or regular mowing keeps the area open.

Can you open a walking trail through my woods?

Yes. We cut a corridor, mulch the growth and leave a soft surface. Mark the trees you want to keep and tell us about any wet spots on the route.
