We use track loaders with forestry mulcher heads to clear brush, saplings and small trees and leave the mulch on the ground. In Amherst that suits wooded lots where the understory has closed in, overgrown lawn and field edges, and corridors being opened for a driveway, utility run or trail.

Our mulchers can take hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and their stumps ground separately. Call (603) 438-6492 or use Get a Quote with photos and a rough size of the area. We are family owned, fully insured and have 12 years of experience. See the full forestry mulching service.

Size limit: We can mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and the stumps ground separately.

Where Forestry Mulching Fits in Amherst

Amherst is a wooded town with brooks and bogs close to many lots. Mulching works well on that kind of ground because it leaves roots and soil in place.

Brooks and vernal pools

Beaver Brook, Pulpit Brook and Witches Brook each drain a different part of town, and Amherst's Wetland and Watershed Conservation District covers wetlands, surface waters and vernal pools. We set the mulching line back from wet edges and stay off soft ground.

Lake-edge vegetation

Near Baboosic Lake, state shoreland rules control cutting in the 50-foot waterfront buffer through a point-score system for trees and saplings in 25 by 50 foot segments. Mulching there is limited, and we plan it around the score.

Lots next to conservation land

Amherst has the Joe English Reservation, Ponemah Bog Wildlife Sanctuary and Hodgman State Forest within its borders. If your lot adjoins protected land, we need your boundary marked so the mulcher stays on your side.

Slopes on the north side

Ground rises to 865 feet on Chestnut Hill at the northern border. On sloped wooded lots we choose travel lines that keep the machine stable and leave a vegetated strip to slow runoff.

Buffer Rules for Mulching in Amherst

Mulching leaves roots and soil in place, but buffers and water rules still apply.

Town wetland district. Amherst's Wetland and Watershed Conservation District (Zoning Ordinance Section 4.11) is meant to protect wetlands, surface waters and their buffers. Plans for development inside it list vegetation removal and land-surface changes, with Conservation Commission comment (Town of Amherst checklist (opens in a new tab)). Ask Community Development before mulching next to a wetland, brook or vernal pool.

Shoreland. Land within 250 feet of public waters, which include lakes over 10 acres, is protected shoreland (RSA 483-B:4 (opens in a new tab)). In the 50-foot waterfront buffer, tree and sapling removal follows a point-score system and rocks and stumps stay in place unless removal is approved (RSA 483-B:9 (opens in a new tab)).

State wetlands. Excavating, removing or filling in any bank, flat, marsh or swamp next to state waters needs a state permit (RSA 482-A:3 (opens in a new tab)).

We flag buffer questions we see on site. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

How Much Does Forestry Mulching Cost in Amherst?

HomeGuide (opens in a new tab) lists national forestry mulching averages of about $400 to $800 per acre, up to about $2,000 per acre for dense overgrowth, or roughly $125 to $300 per machine hour. It also lists minimum fees of $400 to $600 and mobilization charges of $150 to $300. These are national reference ranges, not our prices.

Our forestry mulching cost calculator gives a planning estimate in a minute, and we confirm the number after seeing the site.

What changes the price here

  • Acreage and how dense the understory is
  • Diameter of the trees, with hardwood over 8 inches cut first and stumps ground separately
  • Setbacks along brooks, wetlands, vernal pools and the lake
  • Slope and soft ground that limit machine travel
  • Distance from the road to the work area
  • Finish level, from rough clearing to mowable ground

Forestry Mulching in Amherst: common questions

Can you mulch right up to a brook on my Amherst property?

No. Amherst's Wetland and Watershed Conservation District protects wetlands, surface waters and vernal pools, and state rules cover banks. We set the mulching line back from the edge unless you have approval.

What is the largest tree you can mulch?

Hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and the stumps are ground separately, which we include in the plan and quote.

I live near Baboosic Lake. Can I clear the brush by the shore?

Only with care. Within 50 feet of the water, state law limits how many trees and saplings can come out and keeps stumps and roots in the ground. Call us with photos and the distance from the water.

What happens to the brush after mulching?

It is shredded and left on the ground as mulch. Nothing is burned, and there is usually nothing to haul away.

Will the brush come back?

Saplings and shrubs can resprout within a season or two. A follow-up mulching pass or regular mowing keeps the area open.
