We use track loaders with forestry mulcher heads to turn brush, saplings and small trees into mulch that stays on the ground. We can mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and their stumps are ground separately.

In Tewksbury that fits overgrown field edges, wooded lots where oak, maple and birch have crowded in, and corridors you want open for a trail or access. Call (978) 696-6659 or use Get a Quote with photos and a rough size of the area.

Where Forestry Mulching Fits in Tewksbury

Tewksbury is a wet, wooded town, so mulching here is as much about where the machine does not go as where it does.

Hardwood regrowth on cleared edges

Tewksbury's forests are mainly oak, beech, maple, birch and aspen, with some white pine and hemlock. Where a field or lot edge has been left alone, hardwood saplings and shrubs fill in quickly, and mulching clears them in one pass at the size we handle.

Wet ground and kettle-hole ponds

The town's ponds are kettle holes left by the glacier, and wetlands and brooks are spread through the lowlands, including the large Great Swamp. Mulching stays out of wet ground and back from the 25-foot No Disturb Zone in the bylaw text the town has posted.

Invasive plants in the wetland edges

The town's master plan names purple loosestrife as an invasive plant found in some of its wetlands. Mulching is for upland brush, not wetland plants, so we leave wet-edge plant control to people with Commission approval.

Borders with protected land

A 2004 state law dedicated 410 acres of Tewksbury Hospital land to conservation, agriculture and passive recreation, and trail work is planned across it. If your lot adjoins land like that, we confirm the boundary before mulching so nothing crosses onto protected ground.

Buffer Rules for Mulching in Tewksbury

Mulching leaves roots and soil in place, but the vegetation still counts under local wetland rules.

Tewksbury Wetland Protection Bylaw. The posted text lists a 25-foot No Disturb Zone inside the 100-foot buffer, where vegetation clearing and cutting are prohibited unless the Commission permits them, and a 200-foot buffer around vernal pools. A written Request for Determination of Applicability is the way to ask whether your brush clearing is covered (Bylaw (opens in a new tab)). The Conservation Agent can be reached at (978) 640-4370, ext. 255 (Conservation Commission (opens in a new tab)).

State law. Altering a bank, riverfront area or freshwater wetland requires a notice of intent to the Conservation Commission, and the riverfront area runs 200 feet from a river's high-water line (MGL c.131 §40 (opens in a new tab)).

We will flag buffer questions we see on site. The town was updating its bylaw at last check, so confirm the current text with the Commission. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

How Much Does Forestry Mulching Cost in Tewksbury?

HomeGuide (opens in a new tab) lists national forestry mulching averages of about $125 to $300 per hour, with some companies adding a $150 to $300 mobilization fee and minimum fees of $400 to $600. What changes the price here

  • Acreage and how thick the hardwood regrowth is
  • Trees over 8 inches that must be cut and ground separately
  • Setbacks from wetlands, vernal pools and the 25-foot no disturb line
  • Ledge, rocks or old wire and fencing in the brush
  • Whether you want rough clearing or mowable ground

Around Tewksbury

A few places locals know, and what they mean for outdoor work nearby.

  • Great Swamp

The largest wetland complex in Tewksbury, in the northwest part of town between Interstate 495 and Route 38, and the source of Trull Brook. Lots that touch wet ground like this can fall inside the town's wetland buffer rules, which changes where equipment can work.

  • Ames Hill

The tallest drumlin in the Shawsheen River watershed, and a scenic hill from which the Boston skyline is visible. Drumlin slopes and the till uplands around nearby Ames Pond are where grinder and loader positioning on a grade matters.

  • Shawsheen Overlook

A 9.55-acre conservation parcel at 760 South Street with a marked Riverwalk trail, a kayak launch and a view over the Shawsheen River. Land along the river is subject to wetland and riverfront rules, and the Conservation Commission manages this parcel.

  • Tewksbury Hospital conservation land

A 2004 state law dedicated nine parcels totaling 410 acres of Tewksbury Hospital land to conservation, agriculture and passive recreation, and the Bay Circuit Trail is planned across it. Private lots that border protected land like this need clear boundary lines before any clearing or mulching.

Forestry Mulching in Tewksbury: common questions

How big a tree can the mulcher handle?

We mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and the stumps are ground separately, and that work is quoted with the rest of the job.

Can you mulch near a pond or vernal pool on my property?

Not without checking first. Tewksbury's bylaw covers 100 feet around ponds and wetlands and 200 feet around vernal pools. We set the work line back unless the Conservation Commission has approved more.

My lot touches the Tewksbury Hospital conservation land. Is that a problem?

It just means we confirm the line first. We ask for a survey, stakes or a plot plan so the mulching stays on your side.

Will the hardwood come back?

Many hardwood species resprout from cut stumps. A follow-up mulching pass after a season or regular mowing keeps the area open.

What happens to the mulch?

It stays on the ground as a layer of wood chips that breaks down over time. Nothing is burned, and there are no brush piles to haul unless you want larger logs removed.
