We use track loaders with forestry mulcher heads to clear brush, saplings and small trees across Derry. The mulcher grinds the growth where it stands and leaves a layer of mulch on the ground, so there are no brush piles to burn or haul. It suits homeowners reclaiming a back lot, landowners opening an old field or woods road, and property managers cutting back overgrown edges.

Call (603) 438-6492 or use Get a Quote with photos and a rough acreage. Tell us if the area is near Beaver Lake, Big Island Pond, a brook or a wetland, because that decides how much we can mulch and where.

Size limit: We can mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and the stumps ground separately.

Where Forestry Mulching Fits on Derry Properties

Mulching leaves roots in the ground and the soil covered, which is why it often works where full clearing would not. These local conditions shape the job.

Shoreland woodland buffers

On lots around Beaver Lake, Big Island Pond and other public waters, at least 25 percent of the area between 50 and 150 feet from the water must stay natural woodland. We map out which areas can be thinned and which stay untouched before the mulcher goes in, instead of clearing wall to wall.

Wet ground and wetland edges

Derry's Wetlands Conservation Overlay District includes poorly drained soils, not just open water and marsh, so ground that looks dry in August can be regulated wet ground. Tracked machines spread their weight better than wheels, but saturated ground still ruts, so we schedule wet areas for dry or frozen conditions and stay out of the wetland itself.

Old fields growing back in

Derry's farming past, still visible at the Robert Frost Farm, left stone walls and old fields on many properties, and plenty of them have filled in with brush and saplings. Mulching knocks that growth back to a mowable field without stripping the topsoil, but buried rocks near walls slow the work.

Trail and corridor edges

Lots that back onto the Rockingham Recreational Trail or a woods road often have dense edges that block views and access. We can open a defined path or a set width along the line and leave the rest of the woods standing.

Rules to Check Before Mulching in Derry

Mulching brush on an upland back lot usually needs no permit. Water and wetlands are where the rules come in.

Protected shoreland. Under RSA 483-B:9 (opens in a new tab), the woodland buffer covers protected shoreland within 150 feet of the reference line, and at least 25 percent of the area between 50 and 150 feet must be kept as natural woodland. Inside the first 50 feet, stumps and roots must stay in the ground. Mulching that would cut into those areas should be planned with NHDES rules in mind.

Wetlands. RSA 482-A:3 (opens in a new tab) requires a state permit to excavate, remove or fill in banks, marshes and swamps, and Derry's Wetlands Conservation Overlay District (opens in a new tab) adds local limits, including a 150-foot buffer around prime wetlands.

Steep slopes near water. NHDES lists disturbance of slopes of 25% or steeper within 50 feet of surface water as an Alteration of Terrain (opens in a new tab) trigger.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Confirm with the Town of Derry or NHDES for your parcel, and we will point out anything on site that raises a permit question.

Forestry Mulching in Derry: common questions

Can you mulch the brush on my Beaver Lake lot?

Partly, in most cases. State shoreland rules keep stumps and roots in the first 50 feet and require at least 25 percent natural woodland between 50 and 150 feet from the water. We plan which areas can be mulched before starting.

What happens to the mulch?

It stays on the ground as a layer that protects the soil and breaks down over time. There is nothing to haul or burn. If you want a cleaner finish in a lawn area, we can discuss raking or extra passes.

Can you reclaim an overgrown field so I can mow it again?

Yes. Mulching takes brush and saplings down to ground level without stripping the topsoil. Fields with stone walls or rock piles take longer, so point those out when you request a quote.

Is forestry mulching OK near wetlands?

We stay out of the wetland itself and keep to the buffers that apply. State law and Derry's Wetlands Conservation Overlay District restrict work in and near wetlands, so check with the town if your area is close to wet ground.

When is the best time of year to mulch in Derry?

Dry summer and fall ground or solidly frozen winter ground keeps rutting to a minimum. Spring thaw is the hardest time for low or wet areas.
