How much does it cost to grind a stump in Goffstown, NH?

Stump grinder working on a sloped backyard lawn behind safety netting

For planning, national cost guides put grinding one stump at about $120 to $400, with each extra stump in the same visit adding about $30 to $60 (HomeGuide). Per-inch pricing usually runs $2 to $5 per inch (HomeAdvisor). In Goffstown, the price on your lot depends on where the stump sits: on a slope toward the Uncanoonucs, near the Piscataquog River, or in stony ground.

We continue to serve Goffstown from our Fitchburg base. The ranges in this post are national reference figures from published cost guides, not our prices.

National reference ranges

No major cost guide publishes Goffstown-specific stump grinding prices. These national figures are the best public starting point.

Source One stump Each additional stump Per inch Minimum fee
HomeGuide $120 to $400 $30 to $60 $2 to $6 $80 to $160
Fixr $150 to $300 ($200 average) $40 to $75 $2 to $5 Often $100
HomeAdvisor $150 to $500 (grinding) $40 to $75 $2 to $5 $100 to $150

HomeAdvisor’s per-inch table puts a 24-inch stump at $48 to $120 and a 30-inch stump at $60 to $150 before minimums and extras.

What changes the cost in Goffstown

Slopes toward the Uncanoonuc Mountains

The Uncanoonuc Mountains are twin peaks in the southwest part of town. The north peak is Goffstown’s highest point at 1,324 feet. Lots on the rising ground around them can be steep.

A grinder needs a stable footing before it cuts. Vermeer’s stump cutter operating guide warns about rollover on side hills and tells operators to work from the uphill side. That means more setup and slower passes. On a steep bank, chips may also need to be raked off the slope or hauled instead of left in place. Expect a hillside stump to cost more than the same stump on flat lawn.

Piscataquog River shoreland

Goffstown’s town center sits on the Piscataquog River, and Black Brook also drains the town. The Piscataquog was designated a protected river in 1993, and Goffstown is one of its river-front towns (NH DES).

That designation matters. Rivers designated under RSA 483:15 count as public waters, and land within 250 feet of them is protected shoreland (RSA 483-B:4). Inside the 50-foot waterfront buffer, “rocks and stumps and their root systems shall be left intact in the ground” unless NH DES specifically approves removal (RSA 483-B:9).

For a riverfront lot, that can change the job entirely. A stump inside the buffer may need to be cut low and left. A stump farther back can usually be ground as normal. This is guidance, not legal advice. Check with the Town of Goffstown or NH DES before work near the water, and send us a photo that shows the stump and the bank.

Stony glacial soil

Much of New Hampshire’s soil formed from glacial till. UNH Cooperative Extension describes till habitats with numerous surface stones and notes that stones can be firmly embedded. Trees grow around those stones, and the grinder finds them.

Rocks slow the work and wear grinder teeth. HomeAdvisor reports that rocky soil can raise stump costs by 50% or more. If a large rock sits inside the stump, it can also limit how deep the grinder can safely go. We tell you on site when that happens.

Village lots vs. rural lots

Goffstown includes the town center, Grasmere, Parker and Pinardville, which adjoins Manchester (Wikipedia). Village and neighborhood lots tend to put stumps close to houses, fences, driveways and buried service lines. Rural lots farther out often have more room but longer runs from the road to the stump and more stumps per job.

Close quarters mean debris screens, careful passes and sometimes a smaller machine. Open rural lots with several stumps often get a lower cost per stump, because the trip and setup are spread across more work.

Utility marking

New Hampshire defines excavation to include “tree and root removal” (RSA 374:48). Work within 100 feet of an underground facility needs Dig Safe notice at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays (RSA 374:51). Marked lines near a stump can also limit grinding depth on that side.

Goffstown examples with our calculator’s reference rates

Our stump grinding cost calculator uses reference rates of $3 per inch for softwood and $5 per inch for hardwood. It adds 20% for moderate access, 50% for difficult access, multiplies by 1.75 for surface roots and applies a $150 minimum per visit. Here is how that plays out for a few typical Goffstown situations:

Situation Calculator estimate
24-inch oak on a gentle hillside (moderate access) $150 (minimum applies; the math is $144)
Same 24-inch oak plus surface roots $252
30-inch maple on a steep bank (difficult access) $225
Three 20-inch pines on an open rural lot (easy access) $180

These are planning figures from the calculator, not quotes and not company prices. Rocks, shoreland limits and chip hauling are not in the calculator, so the final number comes after we see the stumps.

How to keep the cost down

  • Group your stumps. The first stump carries the trip cost. Extra stumps in the same visit cost much less.
  • Measure at ground level. Include the root flare so the estimate matches the job.
  • Clear what you can. Move loose stones, firewood and yard items away from each stump.
  • Mark private lines. Dig Safe does not locate irrigation, lighting or pet fences.
  • Keep the chips. Raking chips into the hole or using them as mulch avoids hauling.
  • Ask about the river first. If you are near the Piscataquog or another river, brook or pond, sort out the shoreland question before scheduling.

Related questions

What does stump grinding cost in Goffstown?

National cost guides put one stump at about $120 to $400, with extra stumps in the same visit at $30 to $60 each (HomeGuide). Per-inch pricing usually runs $2 to $5 or $6. These are reference ranges, not Goffstown quotes. Slopes, rocks and access on your lot move the number.

Can I grind a stump near the Piscataquog River?

It depends on distance. The Piscataquog is a state-designated river, so land within 250 feet is protected shoreland. Within 50 feet of the river, state law requires stumps and their roots to stay in the ground unless NH DES approves removal. Send us a photo showing the stump and the riverbank.

Do I need to call Dig Safe before stump grinding in Goffstown?

Yes, when the work is within 100 feet of an underground facility. New Hampshire counts tree and root removal as excavation, and notice must go in at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays. Private lines like irrigation or pet fences are not marked, so tell us where they run.

Why would a stump on a hillside cost more?

A grinder has to sit stable before it can cut, and manufacturers warn about rollover on side hills. Slope work takes more setup and slower passes, and chips may need to be moved instead of left on the hill. Our calculator adds 20% for moderate access and 50% for difficult access as reference rates.
