We use track loaders with forestry mulcher heads to clear brush, saplings and small trees and leave the mulch on the ground. In Milford that is a practical way to reopen overgrown lot edges, thin wooded acreage, and cut access lanes without burning or hauling brush.

Our mulchers handle hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first, and their stumps are ground separately. Call (603) 438-6492 or use Get a Quote with photos and a rough size of the area. We are family owned, fully insured and have 12 years of experience. Learn more on our forestry mulching page.

Size limit: We can mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and the stumps ground separately.

Where Forestry Mulching Fits in Milford

Milford combines a river, several named brooks and hillier wooded ground, so the mulching line often depends on what water or slope is nearby.

River and brook corridors

The Souhegan River is protected shoreland, and Milford's wetland ordinance gives Mitchell, Spaulding, Great, Purgatory and other brooks wider buffers. Mulching leaves roots in place, which helps hold banks, but we still set the work line back from the water and wet ground unless approvals are in hand.

Overgrown lots near the village

Lots close to the town center run up against fences, neighbors and mature trees you want to keep. We mulch around marked trees, keep the machine off lawns and away from fences, and talk through where houses and windows need protection before we start.

Hillside brush toward Boynton Hill

Western Milford rises to 814 feet. A slope covered in brush and saplings is a good fit for mulching because the machine leaves a layer of chips that slows runoff, but steep or rocky ground limits how far the machine can safely travel.

Hardwood sizes and the 8-inch rule

Wooded lots in the Souhegan Valley often hold mature hardwood alongside the brush. The mulcher takes hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Anything larger is cut and removed first, and the stump is ground separately, so walk the lot with us and mark what stays.

Buffer Rules for Mulching in Milford

Mulching leaves roots and soil in place, but water and wetland buffers still apply.

Shoreland. The Souhegan River is a designated river (RSA 483:15 (opens in a new tab)) and public water with 250 feet of protected shoreland (RSA 483-B:4 (opens in a new tab)). Under RSA 483-B:9 (opens in a new tab), natural ground cover in the 50-foot waterfront buffer is not to be removed except for limited cases, stumps and roots stay in the ground, and at least 25 percent of the area from 50 to 150 feet from the water is kept as natural woodland.

State wetlands. Excavating, removing or filling in or on a bank, flat, marsh or swamp adjacent to state waters needs a permit (RSA 482-A:3 (opens in a new tab)).

Town wetland district. Milford's Wetland Conservation District protects streams, ponds, wetlands and buffers around them. The ordinance text posted by the Conservation Commission shows a 25-foot default buffer and 50 feet for the Souhegan and named brooks, with a special exception needed for larger buffer impacts (ordinance text (opens in a new tab), dated 2003). Confirm current rules with Milford Community Development before mulching near wet ground.

We flag buffer questions we see on site. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

How Much Does Forestry Mulching Cost in Milford?

HomeGuide (opens in a new tab) lists national forestry mulching averages of about $400 to $800 per acre, up to about $2,000 per acre for dense overgrowth, or roughly $125 to $300 per hour. It also notes minimum fees of $400 to $600 and mobilization fees of $150 to $300 are common. These are national reference ranges, not our prices. Our forestry mulching cost calculator gives a planning estimate in a minute, and we confirm the number after seeing the site.

What changes the price here

  • Acreage and density of the brush and saplings
  • Number and size of hardwoods, since anything over 8 inches is cut first
  • Setbacks from the Souhegan and Milford's brooks
  • Slope and rock that slow the machine
  • Trees, fences and lawns that must be protected
  • Finish level, from rough clearing to a clean mulch layer

Around Milford

A few places locals know, and what they mean for outdoor work nearby.

  • Souhegan River

The river that drains most of Milford; the town takes its name from a mill built at a ford on it. State law designates the Souhegan as a protected river through Milford, so land within 250 feet of the water falls under shoreland rules that limit stump and vegetation removal near the bank.

  • The Oval (Union Square)

The triangular town green and traffic rotary at the junction of Routes 13 and 101A, with the Pillsbury Bandstand and the Souhegan River behind it. Streets around the center have close-set houses and small lots that call for compact equipment and debris screens.

  • Brox Community Land

About 270 acres the town bought in 2000 for community uses that include recreation, open space, trails and natural resource protection. It is a reminder of how much open, wooded ground sits near Milford's developed areas, where wetland and buffer questions come up on adjoining lots.

  • Granite Town Rail Trail

A roughly 3-mile trail that runs from Route 13 in Milford toward Brookline along a former rail corridor. The trail leaves the railroad right-of-way south of Armory Road and crosses private land, a reminder to know where a lot line sits before any clearing.

Forestry Mulching in Milford: common questions

How big a tree can you mulch?

We mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and the stumps are ground separately. Walk the lot with us so we know which trees stay.

Can you mulch along a brook or the Souhegan River?

Only with the buffers in mind. Near the river, state shoreland rules limit removal of ground cover and keep stumps in place within 50 feet. Milford also protects brook buffers, so we set the work line back unless you have approval.

Will mulching leave bare dirt?

No. The machine shreds brush into a layer of chips that stays on the ground and protects the soil. Roots remain in place, which helps on slopes.

What do I do about regrowth?

Saplings and shrubs can sprout again from roots. A follow-up mulching pass or regular mowing keeps the area clear.

Can you leave the trees I want to keep?

Yes. Mark the trees to save before we start, and we mulch around them and stay clear of the trunks. Fences and lawn edges get the same attention.
