We grind stumps in Hooksett for homeowners, builders cleaning up house lots, landowners and commercial properties along the Route 3 and I-93 corridors. Our crew brings professional stump grinders, debris safety screens and a mini excavator when roots or rocks have to be moved. Every stump is ground 4 to 8 inches below grade.

When the grinding is done we can rake the chips out, leave them piled for your use, or haul them away with our trucks and trailers. Call (603) 438-6492 or use Get a Quote with a few photos and the number of stumps. We are family owned, fully insured and have 12 years of experience. See how the work goes on our stump grinding page.

What Changes a Stump Grinding Job in Hooksett

Hooksett puts a major river, a public water supply and two ridgelines inside one town. These are the conditions we plan around before a grinder goes on a lot.

Stumps near the Merrimack River

Hooksett sits on the Merrimack River, and the village is at its bridge crossing. Within 50 feet of public waters, state shoreland rules say stumps and their roots stay in the ground unless the state approves removal. We measure from the stump to the water before we quote.

Pinnacle Pond and Brickyard Brook

Hooksett's primary water supply is Pinnacle Pond, and the town's zoning calls for a 50-foot no-cut buffer around the pond and along both sides of Brickyard Brook inside the wellhead protection area. A stump in that strip is a question for the town before it is a job for us.

Wet corners on ordinary lots

The town's Wetlands Conservation Overlay District asks for a 40-foot undisturbed buffer around wetlands of one acre or more, with larger buffers around prime wetlands. A low backyard corner that stays soft in spring can fall inside one of these lines.

Ridge and hillside lots

Quimby Mountain on the western side of town reaches 902 feet, and a ridge on the eastern border climbs toward 900 feet. A stump on a sloped lot limits where the grinder can sit safely, so we plan the setup and the path in from the driveway first.

Close quarters in the village

Houses in built-up areas of town sit close together. We set debris safety screens around the stump so chips stay off siding, cars and windows.

Permits and Rules to Check Before Grinding in Hooksett

Most backyard stump grinding needs no permit. Where the stump sits decides whether a rule applies.

Dig Safe. New Hampshire counts tree and root removal as excavation (RSA 374:48 (opens in a new tab)). Notice goes to the damage prevention system at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays (RSA 374:51 (opens in a new tab)). Dig Safe does not mark private lines such as septic pipes, irrigation or pet fences, so tell us where yours run.

Shoreland. Under RSA 483-B:9 (opens in a new tab), stumps and root systems within 50 feet of the reference line are left intact unless NHDES approves removal or the stump is replaced with pervious surface, new trees or other woody vegetation. Protected shoreland extends 250 feet from public waters, which include lakes over 10 acres and rivers of fourth order or higher (RSA 483-B:4 (opens in a new tab)).

Town buffers. Hooksett's Zoning Ordinance (opens in a new tab) requires a 40-foot undisturbed buffer around wetlands of one acre or more (Article 18, Section G.2) and a 50-foot no-cut buffer around Pinnacle Pond and along Brickyard Brook (Article 19, Section E.13). If a stump is near a wetland, brook or the pond, ask the town before work starts.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. We help you spot when a permit question exists so you can confirm it with the town or NHDES.

What changes the price here

  • Stump diameter and the number of stumps on the property
  • Distance from the Merrimack River or another protected water, which can decide whether grinding is allowed
  • Slope and access on ridge or hillside lots
  • Surface roots that need grinding beyond the main stump
  • Leaving the chips, raking them out or hauling them away
  • Optional loam and seed after grinding, which are an add-on and not part of the grinding

Stump Grinding in Hooksett: common questions

Can you grind a stump close to the Merrimack River?

It depends on the distance. Within 50 feet of the river, state law keeps stumps and roots in the ground unless NHDES approves removal or the stump is replaced with new woody plants. Send photos and tell us roughly how far the stump is from the bank, and we will talk through the options before any grinding.

My stump is near Pinnacle Pond or Brickyard Brook. What happens?

Hooksett's zoning calls for a 50-foot no-cut buffer around Pinnacle Pond and along Brickyard Brook within the wellhead protection area. Call the town first. If the stump is outside that strip, we can usually move ahead.

How deep do you grind, and what happens to the chips?

We grind 4 to 8 inches below grade. The chips can be raked out, left piled for you to use as mulch, or hauled away with our trucks and trailers. Hauling usually adds to the cost, so tell us what you prefer when you ask for a quote.

Do you provide loam and seed after grinding?

Loam and seed are an optional add-on and are not included in a standard grinding job. If you want the spot ready for a lawn, ask for it in your quote request.

Can your grinder reach a stump on a hillside lot?

Usually, yes. Slopes limit where the machine can sit, and rocks around the roots slow the work. Photos of the stump and the route from the driveway help us bring the right equipment.

Do I need to call Dig Safe before you grind?

New Hampshire counts tree and root removal as excavation, so notice must go in at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays. Dig Safe marks public lines only, so point out private lines such as septic pipes, irrigation and pet fences before we start.
