We use track loaders with forestry mulcher heads to clear brush, saplings and small trees and leave the mulch on the ground. In Hooksett that fits fields that have grown back toward the Merrimack, wooded lots on the ridges, and land being opened up for a trail or a building site.

Our mulchers can take hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and their stumps are ground separately. Call (603) 438-6492 or use Get a Quote with photos and a rough size of the area. We are family owned, fully insured and have 12 years of experience. See the full forestry mulching service.

Size limit: We can mulch hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Larger trees are cut first and the stumps ground separately.

Where Forestry Mulching Fits in Hooksett

Mulching leaves roots and soil in place, which suits land near water. The town's wetland rules still decide how close a mulcher can work.

Fields near the river

A Forest Society account of Hooksett's protected Merrimack riverfront describes corn and hay fields beside floodplain forest. Open fields like these fill with saplings and shrubs fast once mowing stops, and a mulching pass brings them back to ground that can be cut again.

Forestry near wetlands needs extra care

Hooksett's ordinance says construction, forestry and agricultural work within 100 feet of any wetland must avoid erosion and siltation into the wetland. We keep the machine on firm ground and set the work line back from soft edges.

Prime wetland buffers

Inside a prime wetland buffer, forestry is a conditional use that needs Conservation Commission review and Planning Board approval. We do not mulch inside one of these buffers without that approval in hand.

Wooded ridge lots

With ground rising to about 900 feet on both the western and eastern sides of town, wooded lots there often slope. Slope decides how the mulcher travels, where we leave a vegetated strip, and how we handle runoff.

Buffer Rules for Mulching in Hooksett

Mulching leaves roots and soil in place, but buffers and water rules still apply.

Town wetland buffers. Hooksett's Zoning Ordinance (opens in a new tab) keeps a 40-foot buffer around wetlands of one acre or more undisturbed and a 100-foot buffer around prime wetlands (Article 18, Section G). Forestry within a prime wetland buffer needs a Planning Board conditional use permit after Conservation Commission review (Section D.4).

Wellhead area. A 50-foot no-cut buffer is required around Pinnacle Pond and along both sides of Brickyard Brook (Article 19, Section E.13). Clearing near either needs a call to the town first.

State wetlands. Excavating, removing or filling in any bank, flat, marsh or swamp next to state waters needs a state permit (RSA 482-A:3 (opens in a new tab)).

Shoreland. Land within 250 feet of public waters is protected shoreland, and rocks and stumps in the 50-foot waterfront buffer stay in place unless removal is approved (RSA 483-B:4 (opens in a new tab); RSA 483-B:9 (opens in a new tab)).

We flag buffer questions we see on site. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

How Much Does Forestry Mulching Cost in Hooksett?

HomeGuide (opens in a new tab) lists national forestry mulching averages of about $400 to $800 per acre, up to about $2,000 per acre for dense overgrowth, or roughly $125 to $300 per machine hour. It also lists minimum fees of $400 to $600 and mobilization charges of $150 to $300. These are national reference ranges, not our prices.

Our forestry mulching cost calculator gives a planning estimate in a minute, and we confirm the number after seeing the site.

What changes the price here

  • Acreage of field, edge or woods to clear
  • Diameter of the trees, with hardwood over 8 inches cut first and stumps ground separately
  • Setbacks along wetlands, brooks and the river
  • Slope and how the machine can travel across it
  • Rocks or old fence lines hidden in the brush

Forestry Mulching in Hooksett: common questions

What size trees can you mulch?

We mulch brush, saplings and hardwood up to 8 inches in diameter. Anything larger is cut first and the stump is ground separately, which we include in the plan and the quote.

Can you mulch near a wetland on my Hooksett lot?

We can work near one, but not through it. Hooksett keeps a 40-foot buffer undisturbed around wetlands of one acre or more and 100 feet around prime wetlands. We set the mulching line back from the wet edge unless you have approval.

Will mulching reopen an overgrown field so I can mow again?

Yes, in most cases. Mulching clears saplings and brush and leaves a mulch layer that breaks down. Rocks and stumps in the field may need attention first, so send photos.

What happens to the brush?

It is shredded and left on the ground as mulch. Nothing needs to be burned, and there is usually no brush pile to haul away.

Brush grew back after clearing. What do I do?

Saplings and shrubs can resprout within a season or two. A follow-up mulching pass or regular mowing keeps the area open.
