We grind tree stumps for homeowners, landlords, builders and commercial property managers across Nashua. Our stump grinders fit through gates and narrow side yards, and we set up debris safety screens when we work near houses, cars and windows.

Call (603) 438-6492 or use Get a Quote with a few photos and the number of stumps. We are family owned, fully insured, and have 12 years of experience in southern New Hampshire.

What Changes a Stump Grinding Job in Nashua

Most Nashua stumps sit in built-out neighborhoods, which shapes how we reach them, how we protect what is around them, and what has to happen before the grinder touches the ground.

Buried utilities on small lots

A dense city means gas, water, sewer and cable lines often run close to front-yard and curbside stumps. New Hampshire counts tree and root removal as excavation, so utility marking is part of the plan, and a marked line next to a stump can mean grinding shallower in that spot.

Tight access between houses

Many Nashua yards are reached through a gate or a narrow side yard. Gate width decides which grinder we bring, and work close to siding, windows or parked cars calls for debris screens and more setup time.

River and brook frontage

The Merrimack River, the Nashua River and Salmon Brook all run through the city. Within 50 feet of a protected river, state law generally requires stumps and roots to stay in the ground, so a waterfront stump may need a different approach than grinding.

Stumps by driveways and sidewalks

Old street-side and driveway trees often leave roots under pavement. We grind the stump and visible surface roots, but roots under asphalt or concrete stay where they are unless you plan paving work.

Permits and Utility Checks for Stump Grinding in Nashua

Grinding a stump in a typical Nashua backyard does not usually need a permit, but two rules can apply.

Dig Safe. New Hampshire's damage prevention law lists "tree and root removal" in its definition of excavation (RSA 374:48 (opens in a new tab)). Work within 100 feet of an underground facility needs notice to the one-call system at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays (RSA 374:51 (opens in a new tab)). We plan the job around that window.

River shoreland and wetland buffers. Within the 50-foot waterfront buffer of protected waters, state rules say stumps and their root systems must be left intact unless NH DES approves otherwise (RSA 483-B:9 (opens in a new tab)). Nashua's Land Use Code also protects wetland buffers and treats trees unlawfully removed from a buffer as a zoning violation (Article XI, 190-112 (opens in a new tab)). If your stump is near the Merrimack River, Nashua River, Salmon Brook or a wetland, check with the city's planning office before work. We will tell you when we see a permit question, but this is guidance, not legal advice.

How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Nashua?

For planning, HomeGuide (opens in a new tab) reports national averages of about $120 to $400 for the first stump and $30 to $60 for each additional stump, or roughly $2 to $6 per inch of diameter, with minimum service fees around $80 to $160. Extra-large hardwood stumps in difficult conditions can run higher. These are national reference ranges from a published cost guide, not our prices. • Marked utility lines that limit grinding depth
  • Screens needed near houses, windows or parked cars

Stump Grinding in Nashua: common questions

Do I need a permit to grind a stump in Nashua?

Usually not for a regular yard stump. Stumps within a wetland buffer or near the Merrimack River, Nashua River or Salmon Brook can fall under city and state rules, so check with the city first. Utility marking applies to all grinding jobs.

Can your grinder fit through my backyard gate?

Many Nashua yards are reached through a gate, so we ask for the gate width when you request a quote. That tells us which grinder to bring. A photo of the access path helps us plan.

What happens to the grindings?

Grinding turns the stump into a pile of wood chips and soil. You can keep them to fill the hole or use as mulch, or we can haul them away with our trucks and trailers.

Can you grind a stump next to my driveway or sidewalk?

Yes. We grind the stump and visible surface roots, and we use debris screens near pavement, cars and windows. Roots under the pavement stay in place.

Are you insured for work in tight city yards?

Yes. We are fully insured, and we can send proof of insurance with your quote if your landlord, HOA or property manager needs it.
